Technical Tips

How to ensure that your system authorization has not expired.

Generally, if your authorization code expires for PHOENIX/PREFERENCE, users will not be able to access the online system.  However symptoms may be somewhat different depending on whether you have one of these products or both.

If you are running only PHOENIX or only PREFERENCE

In this case it is easy to learn when your system authorization has expired.  First of all the PHOENIX/PREFERENCE systems will fail to initialize and users will be unable to access the online system.  Additionally, the following messages will be displayed on the console:

GC193 GOALSYS - VALID EXPID'S NOT FOUND

GC201 GOALSYS - VALID CPUID FOR YOUR MACHINE IS: xxxxxx DATE: mm/dd/yy

If you are running both PHOENIX and PREFERENCE

In this case if both product codes expire on the same date, then the symptoms will be the same as described above.  However, if the products expire on different dates, then one of the products may successfully initialize while the other fails due to an invalid or expired product code.

If you are running with a valid PREFERENCE product code but you do not have a valid PHOENIX code, you may encounter some of the following:

  • When a user signs-on to the PHOENIX/PREFERENCE system as a supervisor, types "a coursename" and presses ENTER, they receive a message "INVALID COMMAND".

  • When a user signs-on to the PHOENIX/PREFERENCE system as an author to a course, they receive a message "UNAUTHORIZED COMMAND".

  • Users can sign-on to PREFERENCE volumes normally.

If you are running with a valid PHOENIX product code but you do not have a valid PREFERENCE code, you may encounter some of the following:

  • A user requested PREFERENCE help for an application and was taken to the sign-on screen.

  • When a user signs-on to the PHOENIX/PREFERENCE system as a writer to a volume, they receive a message "UNAUTHORIZED COMMAND".

  • Users can sign-on to PHOENIX courses normally.

Verify that you have valid product codes

To verify that you have valid product codes for both PHOENIX and PREFERENCE perform the following steps:

  1. sign-on to the PHOENIX/PREFERENCE system as a supervisor

  2. At the "Type Command Line", type "trlse" and press ENTER.  If you have valid product codes for both PHOENIX and PREFERENCE, the display should contain both of the following messages:

PHOENIX CBT xxxx SYSTEM CBT EXPIRATION DATE mm/dd/yy
PREFERENCE CBR FULL SYSTEM CBR EXPIRATION DATE mm/dd/yy
  1. If you are at the main "SUPERVISOR MENU", then you should see both of the following displayed in the window to the right:

PHOENIX expiration date mm/dd/ccyy
PREFERENCE expiration date mm/dd/ccyy
